Stage 2: Buiza to Poladura de la Tercia

From Buiza, there are 4 possible routes through to the Refugio at Puerto de Pajares in Asturias.

  • The waymarked route rises by some 500 metres to 1,450m in a distance of 2 km. The path winds round the workings of a large mine. The steep sections have a surface of loose stones. It is easy to miss the path at the Great Divide (see below). After it, the path continues following the contours, and then gradually descends to Poladura de la Tercia which has a refugio and a very good Casa Rural (but no bar). From there, over more mountains up to 1450 m. to join the N-630 at Sta. Maria de Arbas or Puerto de Pajares. This route is waymarked with brown marker posts (tablons) and yellow arrows, though at two points it is easy to miss the path.
  • The route to Rodiazmo which starts along the same route to the Great Divide, but goes no downhill through a small gorge to Rodiazmo. From here, one can turn left along a small metalled road to Poladura de la Tercia to pick up the waymarked route there. Alternatively, you can go straight on toe join the N-630 at Villanueva de la Tercia. From there, you have the choice of walking 2 km. to your right to stay at the Hostal Golpejar (km 98.2, Villamarin; tel 987 598 904). or turning left up the N630 a distance of 15 km. over the Puerto de Pajares and down to Parajes village with the refugio.
  • Another possibility from Buiza is to follow the metallaed road to Villasimpliz on the N-630 and then walk along the road to Puerto de Pajares. This is not particularly pleasant because heavy lorries still use this route to cross the Cordillera in order to avoid the tolls on the motorway, so it is not recommended.

The second water hut which marks the Great Divide. Note particularly the tablon standing out to the left of the wide downhill path. (follow down from the black triangle)

It is easy to make a mistake at this point. There are a number of alternatives
(1) The waymarked Contour Path to Poladura de la Tercia, which has a very good Casa Rural and also an albergue in the old school. This path is described here; it goes very close to the tablon ( see picture above, right)
(2) The Downhill Track which will take you to Rodiezmo. From here, you can turn left on the very minor road to Poladura de la Tercia. This route is very easy walking. Be warned, however, that if you go straight on from Rodiezmo, you will then get to the N-630, and can either walk 15 km. to your left over the Puerto de Pajares to the albergue 5 km. the other side of the mountain, or turn right and walk 2 km in the wrong direction to the rHostal Golpejar (km 98.2, Villamarin; tel 987 598 904). which has rooms and a restaurant for travellers on the N-630.
(3) There is also the Zig-Zag track going upwards just before the second water hut. This is not waymarked; we have gone up to the top of it, from which you can see San Martin de la Tercia, and it seems more likely than not that there are paths down the far side of it.

The second water hut has on its side a small tablon ponting to the upper path

The beginning of the Contour Path; note that it is quite narrow, and thus easy to miss from the Great Divide

The picture above and the next seven pictures form a panorama which you can see in one wide picture here.
