Stage 12 - Montserrat to Igualada

Route map of this section

Leaving Montserrat before dawn

and a moment later, the sun appears

The sign to the des Dagotalls path - a level roadway where most of the towns of Spain have placed plaques to Our Lady of Montserrat

Here are two examples - most have the Virgin as a white lady

though there are a few showing her as she is in the church

The path gets harder when the plaques stop

There are some good wild flowers

The GR171 stays above the road, but it has many inclines and declines, and is quite stony, so is very slow going. The road gives one a better view of the mountains and is much less tiring

There is a short tunnel on the road, with a signed pilgrim path outside it

The monastery of Santa Cecília, apparently deserted.

Interior of the chapel

I tried a short section of the GR172 path

but it was slow going, and when I found some concrete steps down to the road again, I went down them.

Changing views of the mountain on the road to Can Marçana (the ç is pronounced as an S in Catalan)

An old abandoned building at Can Marçana

Very steep, but short, ascent

Looking back at the dagged mountain

The Way becomes an easy "rural path" with magnificent views

First view of Sant Pau de la Guàrdia

Passing through a field of bright yellow oilseed rape

Lizard going the wrong way on the N-II

The main square at Igualada, with the public library (with free Internet) at the end
